Oil stains on driveways, paths and garage floors can be an unsightly and difficult to remove problem. These oil stains can be caused by small oil leaks from vehicles or oil spills when carrying out DIY maintenance.

For fresh oil stains and larger oil spills it is recommended to try an absorb as much of the oil spill as possible as quickly as possible. Keep an inexpensive bag of cat litter on hand or use sawdust, and when an oil stain occurs, cover the stain with a thick layer. Let sit for a day or so, and the kitty litter or sawdust will work to absorb the oil. Sweep up and the oil stain should be much reduced. Any resulting stain can then be tackled with one of our products for Removing Oil Stains.

Please note: The longer a stain has been there the harder it becomes to remove. Sometimes even impossible. It is always recommended to test a small area for colour fastness on tarmac or coloured surfaces.

We sell three products for use on oil stains and spills - which one you choose depends on the material you wish to remove the oil stain from and how long the oil stain has been there.

If you are dealing with an oil stain on a non-porous* or a fresh stain on a porous* surface we recommend using either Oil Patch Cleaner or Gunk Driveway Cleaner. They are both effective products the main difference is that the Oil Patch Cleaner can be diluted with water on recent stains and therefore will cover more area.

Oil Patch Cleaner

Recent oil stains: Mix 1 part Oil Patch Cleaner with 4 parts hot water. Apply diluted solution to affected area with a watering can. Brush well and allow to soak for 10 minutes. Rinse, whilst brushing, with plenty of clean water.

The rinsed solution will not sour the soil or harm animals or plants. Do not use on newly surfaced drives within two months.

For treating older oil patches on non-porous* surface: Apply concentrated Oil Patch Cleaner neat to the affected area. Brush well and allow to soak for 10 minutes. Rinse, whilst brushing, with plenty of clean water.

Coverage of Oil Patch Cleaner is: 1 Litre treats up to 9m².

Gunk Driveway Cleaner

Shake well before use. Pour onto stained area and scrub well with a stiff brush. Allow 15-20 minutes to take effect. Rinse off with plenty of water. Stubborn stains may require repeat application.

When using on tarmac or asphalt, dilute with 4 parts water.

For removing oil stains and spills from porous* surfaces we recommend HG Oil and Grease Absorber.

Oil and Grease Absorber

Apply around the edges of the oil stain gradually moving towards the middle. Wait for at least 4 hours, until the HG Oil and Grease Absorber has dried completely into an easily removable 'cake'.

For stubborn oil and grease stains, or extremely extensive contamination, repeat the treatment as necessary. Any remaining 'cake' can be removed using a damp cloth.

* you can check the porosity of a surface by leaving a tablespoon of water on the surface and observe the water for 5-10 minutes. If none of the water is absorbed and water just remains in a puddle on the surface the surface is NOT porous.
